  2. Best Bluetooth Speakers For Imac

Wireless speakers are everywhere these days. Big, small, portable, expensive, cheap, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi.. the sheer amount of choice can seem overwhelming. But our top picks are sure to have at least one speaker that's right for you. Before anything else, though, you need to decide how you want to go wireless.

Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi Speakers

Bluetooth is the most common wireless music streaming standard, but it isn't the only one. Bluetooth is a point-to-point wireless system, pairing a transmitter (your phone or computer) with a receiver (your speaker) to play music. It's very direct and easy to set up, and can stream pretty high-quality music thanks to technological advancements that have greatly improved audio fidelity over what it was a few years ago. Bluetooth generally doesn't have any multi-room tricks in itself, though some speakers can set up stereo pairs with the help of an app, while others can create a wireless mesh among multiple speakers for multi-room audio. It isn't quite as high-fidelity or as powerful as Wi-Fi multi-room audio, however.

Best Buy customers often prefer the following products when searching for Bluetooth Speakers For Mac Mini. The Bluetooth speaker market is a cutthroat business when you get to this price range. The good news for music lovers is that you can find some very good products here.

Wi-Fi audio includes standards like Apple AirPlay and Google Cast, along with various manufacturers' own Wi-Fi streaming platforms, like Sonos (which now includes Ikea's Symfonisk line). Wi-Fi can handle more bandwidth than Bluetooth, so it can support higher fidelity audio. It can also integrate into your home network, so you can easily play audio from any device connected to your Wi-Fi without pairing anything. The trade-off is that Wi-Fi music systems generally require a Wi-Fi network to connect to, so they can't be used portably with your smartphone like Bluetooth speakers. The different Wi-Fi standards also mean various services might or might not be available to stream over the device, though this is less of a problem than it has been in the past thanks to Google Cast and Sonos' lengthy lists of supported third-party services.

Most new speakers available feature some kind of wireless support, whether they're clip-on bike speakers or big soundbars. With some exceptions, any speaker you pick up at an electronics store will be able to stream audio either over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Your speaker might even be able to handle both wireless methods. Check if your Wi-Fi speaker has a Bluetooth mode for using it on the go.

What Kind of Speaker Do You Want?

Besides the type of wireless connection, you need to think about what style of speaker you want. Smaller, battery-powered speakers (usually Bluetooth) are useful because you can take them anywhere, but they don't get particularly loud. Larger speakers generally offer fuller sound and richer bass, but they can be more expensive and are often not portable.

Besides single speakers, you can also find stereo pairs designed for desktop computers and home theater speaker systems like soundbars, soundplates, and home-theaters-in-a-box. These speakers are obviously not portable at all, but if you want a centerpiece sound system for your living room or office they're likely your best choice.

Bluetooth Speaker Portability

For a speaker to be portable, it needs to both be small and light enough to easily carry around, and be equipped with a battery so it can run without being plugged in. Of course, 'small' and 'light' are relative; tiny speakers with carabiners let you clip them to your backpack and take them on hikes, while much bigger and heavier speakers might be intended only to be taken from room to room in your home.

Bluetooth speakers are usually portable, but they don't have to be. If a Bluetooth speaker is too big to easily carry around, or doesn't have a battery, it won't be portable.

Since Wi-Fi speakers rely on a separate network to enable multi-speaker and multi-room audio playback, they're rarely portable. After all, portability doesn't matter if you need to be connected to your home's hotspot. There are exceptions, though, and Wi-Fi speakers can still be portable if they have batteries, and ideally can create an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network with your phone.

Durability

Not all portable speakers are built to be carried around outdoors, or used by the pool. Rugged speakers can handle splashes, dunks, drops, and gunk and keep running. If you try that with the non-rugged speakers on this list, however, you'll find yourself with a brick instead of an audio device. Look for speakers with IPX ratings and guarantees of water and shock resistance if you want to carry them around to the beach, the lake, the slopes, or the sewers. Our guide to IP ratings explains what those numbers mean, so you can know whether your speaker can handle getting dunked in the pool, or if it simply will stay intact in a light drizzle.

For more, see our list of the best outdoor speakers.

Bluetooth Audio Quality

Unless portability is at the top of your priority list, sound quality is paramount. Plenty of speakers don't offer much in the way of features, but produce top-notch audio. Big bass isn't for everyone, but unless your speaker is downright tiny, it should be able to reproduce low frequencies accurately without distorting at high volumes. Clarity is more important than sheer power, and a balanced, clean sound should be your goal when shopping for a speaker. If you want a sound system that can drive a whole party instead of just fill a small room, keep the size of the speaker in mind; generally, the bigger a speaker is, the louder it can get while still sounding good.

See How We Test Speakers

As mentioned earlier, in the early days of wireless audio Bluetooth was far inferior to Wi-Fi standards because of limited bandwidth and audio compression. Those problems have been largely solved, and Bluetooth 4.0 (not to mention 5.0) and its relevant audio codecs can transmit excellent quality audio. Wi-Fi can still get an edge purely due to the available bandwidth, and if you want to listen to lossless music on services like Tidal you should probably go with Wi-Fi over Bluetooth. Of course, a wired connection can be better than both thanks to either faster data speeds for digital signals or simply the fact that the wire is carrying the analog sound without any conversion. But this guide is for wireless speakers.

Voice Assistants

Voice assistants let you simply tell your speaker what to play instead of looking through your smartphone. They were initially very limited, closed systems only available on first-party devices, like Alexa on the Amazon Echo and Google Assistant on the Google Home, but that's steadily changing. More and more third-party speakers are integrating some form of voice assistant, either Google Assistant or Alexa.

These voice assistants are useful for more than just playing music. You can ask them for weather forecasts, sports scores, unit conversions, and even language translation. They also generally support third-party skills that let you do anything from order pizza to play trivia games. If you have other smart home devices, you might even be able to integrate them as well, letting you control the lights and thermostat with your voice.

Voice assistant speakers have one universal requirement: Wi-Fi. They need an internet connection, and without one voice recognition and all of the processing needed to find your music, answer your questions, and control your smart home devices simply won't work. These speakers can still be portable, and even offer Bluetooth connectivity when you're away from your network, but those features aren't certain. The most prominent first-party voice assistant speakers like the Amazon Echo and the Google Home don't have batteries.

Price

Speakers come in a wide range of prices. Don't assume, however, that the most money always buys the best overall product. Generally speaking, higher-end models do sound better, but sometimes they lack the features you might expect for the price. The trick is to get the best sound, along with the features you want, at a price you can afford. And, of course, if you want to know about all of those things, you can read our reviews of each speaker.

The easiest way to get the best price: Shop around online. You'll often find prices well below list if you do a little bargain hunting on the web. Don't be afraid to look for similar speakers to the ones on this list, either; a number of the options included here have solid predecessors that you can now find for much less since they've been replaced. We've also rounded up our favorite Bluetooth speakers under $100.

Welcome to the Best Bluetooth Speakers Buying Guide: This is TechRadar's expert round-up of the best portable and outdoor speakers you can buy in 2019.

A portable Bluetooth speaker is a must-have device for the summer. It's a perfect outdoor companion for days at the beach, nights out by a bonfire and picnics in the park.

Having said that, we also think a portable speaker is a great addition to any home for relaxing in the bath or working in the garden when your phone's speakers just won't cut it.

Most of us can't afford a new speaker for each occasion, which means we need to look for one that'll see us from the bath to the beach and everywhere in-between. That's why we've put together this buying guide, which will help you find the right Bluetooth speaker for your needs (and your budget).

How to pick out the best Bluetooth speaker

There are so many new speakers on the market these days with great designs and the latest tech built-in that it can be tricky to figure out which one you need. Although it may seem like the choice is endless, there are plenty with unique selling points that'll suit you.

First up, some speakers are built with ultimate durability in mind, others are weather and waterproof for camping and tunes by the pool; however, some aren't fit for the outdoors and would look pretty inside your home instead.

Best

If you're having trouble figuring out which speaker might be best for you, start by picturing where you're going to use it and find a speaker that matches that setting. That means if you're a beach person, water and dust-proofing in your outdoor speaker are key.

Or, if you're a party person, you might want the ability to connect two speakers together or a speaker with multi-point pairing that allows multiple devices to connect at a time. Battery life, sound quality, and design are paramount for all speakers, and we've done our best to take these in the utmost consideration when creating our list.

That said, here are 10 of our favorite portable wireless speakers right now, ranked by their price-to-performance ratio, that will surely work for you.

1. UE Boom 3

Weight: 1.2 pounds | Battery life: 15 hours | Wireless range: 30+ feet | Frequency response: 90Hz-20kHz | Drivers: Two 1.75' drivers and two 1.75' x 3' passive radiators | NFC: Yes | Aux-in: Yes USB charging: Yes

IP67 waterproof/dust-proof
Macbook
Rugged design

While we weren't as impressed with the UE Boom 3 as we were with its predecessor, this is still the best Bluetooth speaker money can buy in 2019. This is a speaker that can get loud and not distort at higher volumes; be light enough to carry on a camping trip but remain durable enough to tumble in a bag unprotected.

It's both water- and dust-proof, and now has a one-touch mix button that lets you pull up your favorite playlists without ever picking up your phone.

There are certainly more detailed speakers out there (see: Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin down below), but at a price that's relatively affordable to all, the UE Boom 3 hits all the right notes for the third year in a row.

Ultimate Ears now lets you customize your UE Boom 3, so you have even more options when it comes to color and pattern combinations.

2. Bose SoundLink Revolve

The best Bluetooth speaker runner-up

Weight: 1.5 pounds | Battery life: Up to 12 hours | Wireless range: 30 feet | Frequency response: N/A | Drivers: N/A | NFC: No | Aux-in: Yes | USB charging: Yes

True 360-degree sound
Detailed and expansive sound
Only 30ft (10m) range

The Bose SoundLink Revolve is an excellent sound speaker for folks looking for true 360-degree sound. It’s great for sharing music during a party or for moving around the room without losing audio fidelity. However, the Bose SoundLink Mini II sounds slightly better and is slightly cheaper to boot.

On the debit side, it’s also not fully dust or waterproof so you’ll want to think twice before bringing the Revolve to the beach.

For half the price, the Wonderboom is a great speaker that is completely dust and waterproof and while it can’t match the audio fidelity or features of the Bose, it's still great for on-the-go listening. If bass is your game, the JBL Charge 3 is an excellent fully waterproof speaker that sounds great, but is big and heavy along with it.

3. JBL Charge 4

Weight: 2.12 pounds | Battery life: 20 hours | Wireless range: 30+ feet | Frequency response: 60Hz - 20kHz | Drivers: Two 1.7' drivers and two passive radiators | NFC: No | Bluetooth version: 4.2 | Aux-in: Yes | USB charging: Yes

Kicking bass response
Exposed woofers

For the money, the JBL Charge 4 is a definite no-brainer. For just $150 (£160, AU$200), you get a speaker that lasts all day, sounds great, can put up with all kinds of abuse, and tops your phone up in a pinch. Yes, there are better sounding speakers but you’ll have to spend much more money.

While the JBL Charge 4 only offers minor updates to the previous generation, it remains an excellent value in wireless speakers - and is one of the best waterproof speakers around.

4. Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless

Weight: 14 pounds | Battery life: N/A | Wireless range: N/A | Frequency response: 44Hz - 28kHz | Drivers: Two 25W tweeters, two 25W mid-range drivers, one 50W subwoofer | NFC: No | Bluetooth version: 4.1 | Aux-in: Yes | USB charging: No

Excellent all-around sound
Limited stereo effect

The new Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless is a beautiful piece of design. It's a solid, reassuringly weighty wireless speaker delivering on all the B&W audio heritage which the British audio maestro has been building up throughout its lifetime: The sound is clear and natural, delivering room-filling audio with seriously punchy mid-range, and dynamic, controlled bass.

Its price might put a bit of a damper on your wallet, but if you have audiophile tastes that extend into the portable speaker space, the Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless is the only speaker you should be considering.

5. Anker Soundcore Flare

The best budget Bluetooth speaker

Weight: 1.1 pounds | Battery life: 12 hours | Wireless range: 20m / 66ft | Frequency response: N/A | Drivers: 2 x 1.75' Full Range + 2 x Passive Radiator | NFC: No | Aux-in: Yes | Bluetooth version: 4.2 | Weatherproofing: Yes-IPX7 | Charges devices over USB: No

Impressive sound for the size
Average battery life

Anker has a history of making excellent budget wireless speakers. While we weren’t entirely impressed with the Anker SoundCore 2’s sound, we couldn’t be too mad since the speaker was so affordable.

So what happens if you can stretch your budget? For around $20 more you get the Anker Soundcore Flare, an excellent waterproof Bluetooth speaker that can stand toe-to-toe with the competition.

The Soundcore Flare is an amazing value in the sub-$100 wireless speaker segment. Competitors like the UE Wonderboom (listed above) give the Flare a run for its money in terms of build quality but we give the Flare the slight edge with sound quality. We recommend the Flare for anyone looking for a wireless speaker that can do it all without breaking the bank.

6. Bose SoundLink Mini II

The best mid-range speaker

Weight: 1.5 pounds | Dimensions: 2 x 7.1 x 2.3 inches (H x W x D) | Battery life: Up to 10 hours | Wireless range: 30 ft (10 m) | Frequency response: N/A | Drivers: N/A | NFC: No | Bluetooth version: N/A | Aux-in: Yes | USB charging: No

Stellar sound
Compact form factor

The Bose SoundLink Mini II is relatively ancient, having been released in June 2015. However, writing off the SoundLink Mini II because of its age would be a mistake, as it remains one of the best sounding wireless speakers.

That said, it punches way above what its size would suggest, producing deep bass, sparkling highs and a lush midrange. While most wireless speakers sound OK, the Mini II proves that small speakers don’t need to compromise on sound, and other Bose conveniences like a charging pad.

7. UE Wonderboom 2

The best outdoor speaker gets a refresh

Weight: 0.93 pounds | Dimensions: 104 x 95.3mm (H x D) | Battery life: Up to 13 hours | Wireless range: 100 ft (33 m) | Frequency response: 75 Hz – 20 kHz | Drivers: two 40 mm active drivers and two 46.1mm x 65.2mm passive radiators | NFC: No | Bluetooth version: N/A | Aux-in: No | USB charging: No

Great sound for its size
30% better battery life
No speakerphone

The original UE Wonderboom has been at the top of our best waterproof speaker list since its debut and for good reason: it’s rugged, plays louder than its diminutive sound suggests, and could be paired to other UE Wonderboom speakers to amplify sound.

And although the UE Wonderboom 2 looks nearly identical to the original, Ultimate Ears packed in a slew of upgrades that make the Wonderboom 2 even better, like the increased battery life (up 30% compared to the original), better bass response, and the new Outdoor Boost feature that helps the speaker get even louder than before.

The UE Wonderboom 2 is a fantastic rugged and waterproof speaker you’ll actually want to take with. Its small size doesn’t mean small sound, however, as the speaker gets extremely loud and sounds great. While it can’t match the bass response of larger speakers like the UE Boom 3 or the Bose SoundLink Revolve, the improved bass adds warmth and intensity to music that the original was lacking.

All said, for $100 (£90 AU$129), the UE Wonderboom 2 is still one of the best waterproof speakers you can buy - and our recommended option for those looking to bring their speaker to the beach or pool.

8. Tribit XSound Go

The best ultra-budget portable Bluetooth speaker

Weight: 0.8 pounds | Battery life: Up to 24 hours | Wireless range: N/A | Frequency response: 85 - 20,000 Hz | Drivers: 2 x 6W | NFC: No | Aux-in: No | USB charging: No

Ultra-cheap
Charging takes a long time

The Tribit XSound Go shouldn’t sound this good for the price, but it does. The speaker impressed with balanced sound, is near distortion-free at high volumes, and lasts and incredible 20+ hours of playtime at medium volume. Plus, the speaker is IPX7 water and dust resistant so it’ll put up with a day at the beach or pool without a problem. While its design may be forgettable, you won’t care once you hear how good the XSound Go sounds.

In terms of competition, you’ll have to spend a lot more for better sound quality. The UE Wonderboom is an excellent outdoor speaker, but will cost twice the money and doesn’t last as long as the Tribit. However, the UE Wonderboom does offer 360-degree sound and multi-speaker pairing if that matters to you. The JBL Flip 4 is also a good alternative if you want more bass emphasis and 360-degree sound but, if you're on a budget, you can't beat the XSound Go.

9. Sony SRS-XB501G

The ultimate party speaker with Google Assistant built right in

Best Bluetooth Speaker For Mac Mini

Weight: 6 lb 14 oz | Battery life: 12 hours | Wireless range: Approx. 98 ft | Frequency response: 20 - 20,000Hz | Drivers: 45mm | NFC: Yes | Aux-in: N/A | USB charging: No

Portable party speaker
Lights aren't synchronized

The SRS-XB501G is a big speaker that offers a light show, tripod mount, big sound, and Google Assistant. This is a speaker that you can truly use on the go and in the home after a day of partying. On the go, the speaker is brilliant, playing loudly and for up to 16 hours. But at home, it’s dated design and average voice detection are compromises compared to dedicated home speakers.

Competitors like the LG PK7 sounds slightly better and has a light show that actually reacts to your music, however it doesn’t have the Google Assistant built in. If you’re looking for an actual portable speaker that you can fit in a bag that also supports Google Assistant, the JBL Link 20 is a good choice. Just don’t expect it to pump out as much bass or offer as wide of a soundstage.

Best Bluetooth Speakers For Imac

To that end, the XB501G is a good all-around compromise that fills multiple purposes. It's not the best wireless speaker, nor the best smart speaker, but it's a solid entry in both categories and one of a select few to exist in both camps.

10. Denon Envaya (DSB-250BT)

The most durable Bluetooth speaker

Performance wise, as with everything, the faster your Mac the better. Best free flight simulators for mac.

Weight: 1.6 pounds | Dimensions: 209 x 74 x 77mm (W x D x H) | Battery life: 13 hours | Wireless range: 30m (100ft) | Frequency response: N/A | Drivers: 2 x 40mm Full Range Driver, 1 x 53x135mm Passive Radiator | NFC: No | Aux-in: Yes | Bluetooth version: N/A | Weatherproofing: Yes | Charges devices over USB: No

Powerful, rich, room-filling sound
Stiff buttons

The newest speaker in the Denon Envaya line is one of the first speakers to absolutely blow us away in 2018. It offers powerful, room-filling sound that will sound great to most ears, plus comes with an IP67 rating, make it both dust and waterproof. It's also built like a tank, making it one of the most durable speakers we've ever laid our hands on.

Despite a nearly flawless performance, the Envaya isn't perfect: While sound quaity is full, powerful and rich, it doesn’t have the treble bite some like and the buttons located along the side can feel stiff and difficult to operate. These are ultimately minor complaints, however, and the Denon Envaya remains a great Bluetooth speaker – easily one of the best you can buy this year.

  2. ThumbsUp is a simple, drag-and-drop based utility to create thumbnails for a bunch of pictures and supports all image formats of Mac OS X and QuickTime (including PDF documents).

Do you have an idea for a game that’s been brewing for years? What if you could bring that idea to life, even without any game development experience? These days, anyone can make a video game with the right software and a bit of know-how.

Of course, that doesn’t mean game development is easy. Even a simple game like Flappy Bird or Tetris requires effort if you want it to look and feel good. But thanks to free game development software tools, a game that once might’ve taken a year to make can now be made in months or days—sometimes even without any code!

Here are the best free game development tools and software you can use to start making your dream game today.

Note: This list is ordered from least complex to most complex. The simpler free game development tools are easier to pick up, but have more limitations. As you go down the list, you’ll gain more flexibility but steeper learning curves.

1. Construct 3

No programming needed. Construct 3 is the best option if you’ve never written a line of code in your life. This game development tool is completely GUI-driven, meaning everything is drag-and-drop. Game logic and variables are implemented using the design features provided by the app itself.

Create once, publish everywhere. The beauty of Construct 3 is that it can export to dozens of different platforms and formats, and you don’t have to change a single thing in you game to accommodate these various options. Once your game is done, you can export to HTML5, Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, Microsoft Store, and more.

Lots of documentation. Construct 3 has some of the best and most comprehensive documentation I’ve ever seen for a game development tool. In addition, there are hundreds of tutorials that will help you understand concepts from basic to advanced, and the forum community is extremely active if you ever need assistance.

Asset Store. Most programmers have no skills in art, music, or animations. But that’s fine with Construct 3 because you can always browse and purchase ready-made assets from the Scirra Store. Most asset packs are just a few dollars, but the professional-grade stuff can price at $30 or beyond. You can also buy sample games with source, which can be helpful for studying and learning new tips and tricks.

Pricing. The free version has all of the core features but is limited to 25 events, 2 object layers, 2 simultaneous special effects, 1 web font, no multiplayer functionality, can only export to HTML5, and no permission to sell your games. The Personal license is $99/year and lifts all of these restrictions.

Download:Construct 3

2. GameMaker Studio 2

Drag-and-drop OR code. Like Construct 3, GameMaker Studio 2 allows you to create entire games using nothing more than its drag-and-drop interface for variables and game logic. But unlike Construct 3, GameMaker Studio 2 grants more power through its Game Maker Language, which is a C-like scripting language with a lot of flexibility.

Create once, publish everywhere. Once your game is done, you can export to any number of platforms and formats without having to adjust your code: Windows, Mac, Linux, HTML5, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and more. The free version unfortunately doesn’t allow exporting to any platforms.

Long history. GameMaker Studio 2 is a rewritten-from-scratch version of Game Maker: Studio, which started way back in 1999. Today, it’s one of the most popular and active free game development engines currently available. New versions with feature updates are released at regular intervals.

Built-in advanced features. GameMaker Studio 2 is great because it supports a lot of interesting quality-of-life features right out of the box, such as the ability to add in-app purchases to your game, real-time analytics on how users play your game, source control, multiplayer networking, and extensibility through third-party extensions. It also has built-in editors for images, animations, and shaders.

Pricing. The free version can be used indefinitely, but has limitations on how complex your games can be. The Creator plan costs $39/year and allows exporting to Windows and Mac. Or you can unlock individual exports each with a one-time permanent purchase: Desktop for $99, HTML5 for $149, Amazon Fire for $149, and Android/iOS for $399. Exports for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One are available for $799/year each.

3. Unity

Supports 2D and 3D. Unity started off as a 3D engine, but eventually added official 2D support in 2013. Although it’s perfectly capable of creating 2D games, you may run into the occasional bug or glitch because Unity’s 2D system is actually tacked onto its core 3D system. This also means that Unity adds a lot of unnecessary bloat to 2D games, which could affect performance.

Component-based design. Unity didn’t come up with component-entity design, but it had a huge hand in popularizing it. In short, everything in the game is an object and you can attach various components to each object, where each component controls some aspect of the object’s behavior and logic.

Widespread usage and documentation. To make the most of Unity, you’ll need to use C#. The good news is that Unity is so widely used—among hobbyist and veteran game developers alike—that you’ll find thousands of great Unity tutorialsThe Best Unity 3D Tutorials for BeginnersThe Best Unity 3D Tutorials for BeginnersWant to develop games with Unity, but don't know where to start? Try one of these awesome Unity 3D tutorials today.Read More all across the web to help get you started. Unity itself also has numerous in-depth video series for newbies, and the provided documentation is excellent.

Interested in the coding aspect? Check out our introduction to Unity.

Create once, publish everywhere. Unity has the widest export support of any game engine: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, Facebook, all kinds of VR systems like Oculus Rift and Steam VR, as well as several gaming consoles like PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U, and Nintendo Switch.

Asset store. Want a minimap system in your game? Or how about a commercial-grade networking solution? Maybe you need 3D models, HUD graphics, and environmental textures? Or even a dialog system for your action-adventure RPG? You can acquire all of this and more on the Unity Asset Store, many of which are available for free.

Pricing. The Personal plan is completely free and doesn’t restrict any engine features, as long as you earn less than $100,000 in annual revenue from your games. The Plus plan is necessary up to $200,000 in annual revenue, and also unlocks the coveted “dark theme” for the editor. After that, you’ll need the Pro plan, which allows for unlimited revenue.

4. Godot Engine

Supports 2D and 3D. Like Unity, Godot supports the creation of both 2D and 3D games. Unlike Unity, however, Godot’s support is far better. The 2D aspect of the engine was carefully designed from the start, which means better performance, fewer bugs, and a cleaner overall workflow.

Scene-based design. Godot’s approach to game architecture is unique in that everything is divided into scenes—but not the kind of “scene” you’re thinking of. In Godot, a scene is a collection of elements like sprites, sounds, and/or scripts. You can then combine multiple scenes into a bigger scene, and then those scenes into even bigger scenes. This hierarchical design approach makes it very easy to stay organized and modify individual elements whenever you want.

Custom scripting language. Godot uses a drag-and-drop system for maintaining scene elements, but each of those elements can be extended through the built-in scripting system, which uses a custom Python-like language called GDScript. It’s easy to learn and fun to use, so you should give it a try even if you have no coding experience.

Create once, publish everywhere. Godot can deploy to multiple platforms right out of the box, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and HTML5. No extra purchases or licenses necessary, though some restrictions may apply (like needing to be on a Mac system to deploy a Mac binary).

Built-in advanced features. Godot iterates surprisingly quickly for a game engine. There is at least one major release every year, which explains how it has so many great features already: physics, post-processing, networking, all kinds of built-in editors, live debugging and hot reload, source control, and more.

Free and open source. Godot is the only tool on this list that’s actually free through and through. Because it’s licensed under the MIT License, you can use it however you want and sell the games you make without any restrictions. You can even download the engine’s source code and modify it! (The engine is coded in C++.)

5. Unreal Engine 4

Developed by industry masters. Of all the tools on this list, UE4 is the most professional. It was created from scratch by the geniuses behind the Unreal franchise—people who know what’s needed in a top-shelf engine and what it takes to deliver next-generation features. They know exactly what they’re doing.

Cutting-edge engine features. One of UE4’s driving principles is allowing you to iterate and develop as quickly as you can, so you get features like live debugging, hot reloading, a streamlined asset pipeline, instant game previews, plus hundreds of included assets and systems like artificial intelligence, cinematic tools, post-processing effects, and more.

No code necessary. The unique selling point of UE4 is its Blueprint system, which lets you create game logic without touching any code. It’s advanced enough that you can create entire games, even complex ones, without ever opening a source editor. But if you want to code your own Blueprints, you can do that too.

The best tutorials on the planet. The UE4 YouTube channel has over 800 videos that take you through every inch of the engine, and most of those videos are between 20 and 60 minutes long. That’s more content than you’d get from a semester-long course at university. If you need step-by-step guidance, UE4 has you covered.

Create once, publish everywhere. Starting to see a pattern here? All of the best engines allow seamless exporting to multiple platforms, and UE4 is no exception: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Oculus VR, and more.

Pricing. As a free user, you get access to the entire engine (including source code). You only need to pay a 5% royalty on all revenues after the first $3,000 earned every quarter per game. In other words, you only start paying when your game succeeds.

  1. I've actually been using Construct 3. It's actually kinda cool. I just started today, and so far, I got to the point where I have a character, plus they can move. Thank you for the recommendations. They were very helpful!

  2. You made an error saying Defold focuses on JavaScript since Defold uses pure LUA with calling naming method, if you please could update this info. Thanks!

  3. I am trying to make a first person, choose your own adventure, rpg, but I have no money and little coding experience. Does anyone know of anymore good platforms for a game like I am trying to make?

  4. I used Game Maker Studio to Develop Platform Builder, another toolkit for creating 2D Platformer Games without code. Not many people are using Platform Builder yet, but it's gaining a bit of momentum.

  5. just to let you know that the information about royalty free from unity is now obsolete, when you click 'get unity' you get this green message: 'All Unity plans are royalty-free and include All Platforms Free, Core Engine Features, Continuous Updates, and Beta Access.' it's been updated since june or july 2017.

  6. Enigma (lateral make maker) Is, hands down, the best one out there. It is as close to Game Maker as you can get, and is open source.

  7. have you guys tried or looked into gamesalad ?

  8. I want to computerize ancient hex-grid wargames (I have a boatload of them moldering in the attic). Which free software would be the best for this? I am an experienced software developer, so development skills and complexity are not an obstacle.

  9. my favorite was godot engine 'cause its FREE!!!!!

  10. Hello! I was trying to download Unreal Engine 4 and windows firewall blocked it. Is there a concerning reason for that? I would like to have it, but don't want to damage my computer.
    Any ideas?

    • mine worked fine.

  11. I can confirm that Godot is much much better than Unity.

    • hell yeah buddy

  12. hi, i want to make or you make a game similar to red alert 1, but want to add more stuff. do you guys have a game maker that can do that? tx for your help. that is the best war game i have played and seen.. looks very realistic

    • Don't know if you still need the info but look for openRa

  13. Well done!
Your descriptions are very useful for me!

  17. hello can you please create a unity c# tutorial for running and shooting at a time multi touch tutorial for me

  18. Thank you so much for this! I had an idea to make a fangame for a you tuber that I regularly watch (anyone know Markiplier?) but I didn't want to buy some program I will probably waste $40 of monthly fees before I can even make a proper starting screen. I love this and I'll be trying out the 3DUnity one. Thanks again!

  19. Hi there I had 2 questions that hopefully someone can answer.

    1. Which of these programs can support adverts? E.g embedding adverts in banners or in load screens? (Like AdMob etc) Same goes for in app purchases. Before I found this article I recently made a game using software which isn't on this list and after 100s of hours of dev work I've found out the only way to generate income from the game is to sell it on the app store (which wont get nearly as many downloads as a free game with adverts)

    2. How up to date is this list? I guess it was written a while ago but have things changed much? Is the software listed still the best bet?

    Thanks

    Rich

    • Unity 3D is now Unity Engine 5, and has evolved into a AAA crossplatform for giant studios. At the moment of writing this, Unity Free remians free (engine with all features) and supports globalized UnityADS platform, embedded into engine, since Unity 5.
This is also really outdated: UDK, Unity3D???? REALLY?

  21. I have tried game maker but it still requires loads of Coding and Programing Language that I don’t understand how to use , I just want a easy user interface like the way RPG Maker 2003 is set out , But I want to make a platforming game , So far I have tried IG maker and Gamemaker and both are too difficult for me to grasp and there are so many tutorials and help videos I don’t even know where to start. Can’t believe it’s so difficult for for me to make a simple platformer game like sonic or mario especially this day and age.

    Thanks

    • Bro, just use GDevelop. Its easy to understand, simple coding and you could create a very quality platforming game easily.

      • I REALLY like Gdevelop too. Game Maker made some things just too hard in my opinion. While Gdevelop has a lot of presets and enough Events and Actions to make almost anything 2D. And it's free! No expensive add-on for Android export.

    • Use Game Salad, it needs 0 coding and 100% logic

    • I would try scratch. It is a web based game creator. I'm also pretty sure you can download it but don't quote me on that. It has a very beginner style in which you drag different units of code that just look like regular code but tells you what it does, er.. It's more self-explanatory. You can sign up for free at:
      https://www.scratch.mit.edu/

    • After 3 years of experience with a variety of game engines / Game Maker, I must say that the most user friendly engine is the terrorist.
I have seen on youtube also made a small tutorial about this (though German, there are also many good English tutorials few parts you have the basics out) in only 6 parts I have shown how easy it is for a little indie horror game not only to develop but also changed the menu and then as .exe stores.
Game Guru (successor to the FPS Creator) is also kept very simple models are included in both engines as well as many objects, sounds, trigger zones, and everything you need for a first game.
The shown game engines are in my opinion for the beginning not the right, but rather frightened people.
You need knowledge in C ++ and must know how to write different scripts to get ahead here.
Here is the link to the terror engine you can also test it for free: http://www.zeogames.net/game.php?id=3

  24. If i wanted to design a high-quality horror game, what would you suggest? I'm thinking either Unity 3D or Unreal Development Kit, but what do you suggest?

  25. I'd recommend V-Play from personal experience. V-Play is aimed at all levels of developer but has a very gradual learning curve, making it a great option for beginners.

  26. i plan to make a game simmiler to infamous second son which software should i use?

    • Most large scale commercial games are not made using game making software like this. They are made by large teams of people, with massive budgets.. and while they are generally built off of an existing engine, you're not going to get anywhere if you don't have a solid understanding of things like programming and game physics.

I've met a number of kids who don't even know the basics of computer programming, who think they're going to jump into making something like their favorite games. Let me put it this way: if writing a Tetris clone in, say, C, or Java is something you don't know how to do, you're not going to be making anything that remotely resembles the Infamous games.

  27. Is there any way for me to make a game and post it to the android play store for free? Just curious.

  28. What is the Software to make games like as gta or igi

    • well, it was made with RAGE engine which is propietary software owned by Rockstar Games. You can't get unless ur an employee of Rockstar.

    • They built it from an engine they wrote themselves. If you're not a large team of very skilled and experienced programmers, you're not going to make anything like GTA. That's like thinking you can make your own iPhone with a soldering iron and a disassembled VCR.

  29. So if I use Unity 3D or Game Maker Studio, I could possibly publish one of my games to the play store, or apple store?

    • Unity also comes with pro version
you can check pricing on its website

Pro version has features to publish on way many platforms including playstore and Apple store

  30. l have any idea of creating a game which is familiar to grand theft auto what software must l use

  31. Its really helpful article. Thank you very much for your time.

  32. So the two at the end you mentioned are FREE right? As long as I just want to play around, make my own game and have no ambition to publish them, right? Because I downloaded the free version(Personal Edition?) of Unity and to open it I have to accept that if I(this entity) make 100k I have to buy the Pro Version. The way it was worded has me worried as to accepting the agreement, just so I can experiment and goof around.

  33. It's actually called Unity.. not Unity 3D.

    • relly man really

      • I could just feel the expression in Twin's comment

  45. If you're a fan of the old Sierra/Lucas Arts point and click adventure games, you could give Adventure Game Studio, Visionare2D or Wintermute a try.

  46. Nice post. Alas, RPG Maker XP is not free :(

  47. I used RPG Maker for awhile, never got a game made but I found it was fun to design.

  48. Another good option for people who enjoy Python and want to go a bit further, I would recommend Blender 3D - http://www.blender.org/

It allows for drag-and-drop 3D game creation, as well as letting users drop into Python for some extra logic. It is what our team used to create Boro-Toro - http://www.boro-toro.co.nr

  49. I learn to program using Game Maker 5 about 6 years ago..
And yep, it's one of the best.. very easy to learn, very powerful when learning GML..

RPG Maker is also good in it's area, very simple, but RPG Maker XP is not free U^^

  50. Great article! I'm a fan of PyGame. For those who want to make games that are compatible with multiple systems easily, it is awesome. It uses the Simple DirectMedia Layer (libSDL), so once you learn PyGame, you can then move on to making games with C and libSDL when you are ready. Good stuff.

  51. I use to use Game Maker 4 years ago. I think it's one of the best programs to use for beginners.
And advanced users have made some really amazing games. Some even in 3D.

  52. Nice article Jon. Great resources to get started in game dev.

Programming Platform For C

There’s something of a misconception when it comes to the Mac. While powerful tools like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro certainly have price tags commensurate with their robust feature sets, many of the greatest Mac apps won’t cost you anything more than the time they take to download them.

Online Programming Platform

A quick note before we begin. Apple has changed its security settings in macOS, so you’ll need to allow your system to open a couple of these apps. A dialogue box may pop up telling you a certain app 'is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?' Click Open to proceed with the installation.

    Thanks a lot!
    :-)
Ps: what do you think which tool would be better to make a new billiard game? And I am new to making videogames without experiences.

  14. Defold uses Lua, not Javascript.

  15. My very first programming language was BBC Basic..

  16. Great article! if you are looking for more guys, I highly recommend that blog: blog.theknightsofunity.com

  17. hello can you please create a unity c# tutorial for running and shooting at a time multi touch tutorial for me

  34. I really think that this website helped me out alot!!!!! thx ya'll for lettin' me copy paste all dis info fer my ppt in my class u rlly hrlpred bring out da star in meh. 42. great read, I used to use RPG maker 95, before XP was even around, had some great projects just out of fun.

  44. i think that panda 3d is the best http://www.panda3d.org/

    • (: unibrow ? :D

  53. Thanks, awesome i have always wanted to make a game

There’s something of a misconception when it comes to the Mac. While powerful tools like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro certainly have price tags commensurate with their robust feature sets, many of the greatest Mac apps won’t cost you anything more than the time they take to download them.

Best Free To Do List App For Mac

Elementary OS Luna comes with only the most basic applications pre-installed. Best linux distro for mac pro.

The Mac App Store is full of all manner of apps, from simple utilities to complex programs. New apps are published every day, making it hard to find the best of the best — which is where we come in.

We've gathered the best free apps for the, all in one place so you don't have to go digging. My criteria for apps on this list In researching the best free apps for the Mac, I started by using Apple's category list. This makes it easier to cover the wide variety of content available. If an app is on the Mac App Store, it is in one of the 21 categories that Apple has listed. Because this is a 'free' app list, I tried to only include apps that are truly free or whose functionality is not diminished without an in-app purchase.

Free mac apps downloads

You will see some apps that have premium content that can be unlocked with an in-app purchase, but I've included them on the list because I feel that the free content is noteworthy. Since this is a list of apps, I'm not including services that only have websites without a dedicated app (there are two exceptions to this rule on the list, but they are totally worthy of rule-bending). I've included some apps that are not available in the Mac App Store. That's because some of the best apps in a given category are so much better than any Mac App Store counterpart that I couldn't exclude them. Though this list is long, it is by no means complete. There are just too many free Mac apps available to include everything.

Todoist is one of my favorite to-do apps on iOS and the Mac version is just as awesome. I recently discovered that it works with IFTTT for hundreds of different task-managing options, which frankly makes it the best to-do app for my needs. You can connect it to Google Calendar, weather, and more.

If you don't see your favorite free Mac app on this list, please add it in the comments section with your reason for why it stands out. (Remember: It has to be truly free or the free version of an otherwise premium app that is noteworthy.). Wave is one of those exceptions to the rule of no services without a dedicated app. It is a free software tool for small businesses. You can use it for invoicing, receipts, accounting, and more. You can also add credit card processing and payroll for a small additional fee. It is set up to work with what your business needs are.

Free To Do List Software

If you don't need a feature, you aren't paying for it. If you only need a feature sometimes, you only pay when you use it. Because Wave is dedicated to making small business tools work the way small business owners need them to, I've included it on this list. Developer tools Xcode. Khan Academy is another exception to my rule that a service must have a dedicated app, but it is such a fantastic learning website, rich with online study courses of all levels — for free — that I had to include it. You can learn the colors of the rainbow or the Pythagorean Theorem.
